Green Camp would like to recognize the efforts of 2 adventurous and committed individuals in their efforts to undertake an amazing journey next month. For 6 weeks, Kenny and Jamie will journey by bike and other sustainable means from Phuket, Thailand to Bali, Indonesia. Along the way, they’ll be exploring Southeast Asia’s wealth of biodiversity, and meeting with groups and individuals involved in its protection and destruction. With a focus on making connections with communities to learn more about their conservation efforts and promoting environmental education and action, this adventure has much to recommend.
We’re excited about the Green Riders stop-over in Bali and hope to host them here for a night or 2 along the way. There’s also talk of getting some folks out from our community to join them in their epic ride and to learn more about the experience. If you’d like to learn more about this project and support the riders in their cause, please follow the links below:
Follow the Green Riders online at http://greenriders.asia/ or through their Twitter, Flickr and Facebook feeds. Most of all, watch our ongoing video serials on this blog and our YouTube channel!

Perhaps most significant is the long awaited move to solar power. As of last week, the Green School and Green Camp have taken a big step forward in attaining the goal of becoming energy self-sufficient through the use of over 100 solar panels mounted on bamboo poles around the campus. We’re still unsure exactly how much power the system will provide but we’re hoping that with the completion of our micro-hydro driven vortex project, we’ll be off the grid before the end of the year. Viewing the different alternative energy projects on site is always a highlight for visiting school groups and we hope this opportunity to share part of the Green School Vision encourages others to do the same in their schools and communities.
Green Camp’s reach is extending with recent groups coming from as far away as Saudi Arabia! It’s been wonderful to welcome schools, individuals and families from around the world and the experiences that are being shared are inspiring. Groups that are here during the regular school day are also engaging with the Green School students and the local community through home and away football matches, shared games and casual conversations in our school warung (cafe). We were fortunate to have a group of senior students from the United World College in Singapore with us last week completing an independent service week where they worked teaching english to local children, assisted our local gardeners in maintaining the organic gardens on-site and learned more than they ever thought possible about composting!

In addition to our programs involving schools, families and individual campers, Green Camp is proud to be hosting our 1st Compass School Workshop over the weekend of Apr. 6-9. Aimed at teachers and educators, this 4 day residential program focuses on utilizing a set of ‘Compass tools’ for broadening students’ perspectives on sustainability and providing a framework for supporting whole school sustainability initiatives. We’re looking forward to the skills and insights that will be shared over the course and hope to offer similar environmental education themed programs in the near future. Stay tuned!

Last week, 52 kids aged 10 to 12 from Raffles PSB (Jakarta) came for a 3 day camp. At first, it was a little hard for them to drop the mobile phones, but as soon as they got to walk in the rice paddies – and get dirty in them – everything started to feel right. The enthusiasm for mud continued on Day 2 as the whole group embraced Green Camp’s mud pit challenge. Ibu Linda lead her students in the many games and initiatives and proved a formidable adversary!
Students ended up loving this first experience in nature, away from their life in the big city. Being more independent and able to look after themselves in the Balinese rainforest was a huge step for many. Contributing their energy and hard work to helping clean-up the local river on our final day helped connect the group’s efforts to making a difference in the world.
Thanks, Raffles PSB, for opening up to a new experience and allowing yourselves to have such a good time!
We look forward to seeing you next time,
The Green Camp team
Well we’ve officially made it to the last day of Green Supercamp. It’s been an amazing week full of new learning, new friends, and a deep understanding of what it means to push your limits in the heart of the rainforest! I think everyone would agree that the experience has been challenging both mentally and physically–this is definitely not your typical supercamp! But with these challenges has come the recognition that everyone has resources and inner strength that is a powerful and positive force. Combined with the limitless energy of the group, this group of supercampers has really achieved amazing results. Congratulations everyone!

We are proud to be closely related to the Green School, who will host Bamboopalooza this bext Friday. And, of course, Green Camp will be running great activities during the event!
Please join us for an end of term celebration to rival all end of term celebration! We have lined up a fabulous array of events, activities, performances, vendors, food & drink, plus a great silent auction. Lots of fun for kids and adults. Please do help ensure a great turnout by spreading the word to your friends and neighbors. Again, all proceeds from Bamboopalooza will be split between the John Fawcett Foundation, which provides cataract and facial reconstruction surgery for low-income Indonesians, and the GS scholarship program for Balinese students.

Over 4 days and nights on September, a group of 22 students from Tanglin Trust School came from Singapore for an intensive visual art-based program. Representing senior A-level and IB art classes, they visited studios and museums in Ubud and Klungkung along with numerous opportunities for creating their own works both at Green School and in off-site studios. We were astonished by these young artists’ amazing talent and commitment through their work.
Asked to share their 1st impressions in a single word following a short tour of the site, responses ranged from “inspiring, calm, natural and over-whelming”. Judging from the many works that they produced over the 4 day program, we could say much the same about the quality of their efforts.
Rob Le Grice, Art Dept. Head, when asked about what was significantly different about the process of creating art at Green School, said: “What we’re seeing is students applying school-based learning to a real life artistic situation. This is where real learning happens. There’s so much to draw, they (the students) have to dig deep to be able to really see.”
Both figuratively and literally, they have drawn connections between the ways in which natural environments can promote and foster creativity and artistic expression. We applaud them on their fine efforts and hope to see more Tanglin students back soon.
